First Step Approach &Therapy Methods

3 Weeks Intensive Training-First Step Program

First Step approach and therapy Methods is an intensive program consisting of 60 hours of Intensive therapy in just 3 weeks using the TheraSuit,Neuro Respiratory Therapy and Universal Exercise Units. This is highly effective method of treatment uses cutting edge methods to challenge the child and achieve new physical abilities.

The 3 week intensive program is based on strengthening and conditioning, decreasing unwanted reflexes and teaching new improved motor patterns through repetition and correct alignment 4 hours per day, 5 days per week for 3 weeks. A unique feature of the First Step program is having the time to thoroughly prepare the patient to exercise.

The TheraSuit utilizes technology originally from the Russian space program to fight the effects of weightlessness. The TheraSuit helps hold the patient's body in correct alignment and adds additional weight bearing through the use of bungee type bands that are attached on the suit.

Universal Exercise Unit: which is a highly effective method of strengthening, increasing endurance, balance and functional skills such as kneeling or sitting to standing with less assistance. While in the suit, the child will participate in a structured therapy regime. The compression through bungee bands received in the TheraSuit provides strong feedback from the muscles to and from the brain and spinal cord. As a result, new pathways are established and new movements and skills begin to occur. The results are often very rapid and long lasting even after the session has ended. The gain strength and stamina which leads to success!

Many children gain more progress towards their goals in 3 weeks of intensive therapy then they do in a whole 12 months of ongoing traditional therapy! This means they often advance to the next developmental skill or higher in a 3 week program. For example, if a child is using a walker, it is not uncommon for them to gain the strength, balance and ability to walk with crutches.

Your child attends physiotherapy every week and you know there is so much potential just waiting to emerge. The progress is slow and you wish you had a way to propel your child's physical progress. The catalyst which you have been seeking is here at First Step centre.

At First Step we have highly trained pediatric therapists they know how to challenge the child in a loving environment, pushing their performance and helping them achieve new developmental milestones.
